Son Of Jerry
Lerato Makhetha [stage name Son of Jerry] is a South African born actor and musician best known for his role as Ntando Sibeko on the SABC 3 Soapie, Isidingo. Born in Soweto, bred in New York and raised in Johannesburg, Lerato’s journey in the arts began at the tender age of 10 when he auditioned for a spot in the world renowned Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School.
The 34 year old is a seasoned pianist and vocalist who has worked as a session musician for artists such as Tuks Sengaga, JR, Unathi Msengana and Kabomo to mention a few. This later led him to pour his knowledge and experience gained into a duo group, called Throwback, in 2014. The group was signed by international music recording label Universal Music. He has since left the duo and is charting his path as a solo artist, Son of Jerry, combining his love for keys and Hip Hop, to become Mzansi’s first Hip Hop Pianist.
In 2020 Son of Jerry released a powerful single, titled Makubenjalo which received acclaim in The Star & Times Live, amongst others. He debuted a live piano acoustic version of the song on the Penny Lebyane Breakfast Show on Massiv Metro, igniting nostalgia and much needed inspiration for us as a nation to step up against social injustice such as xenophobia & gender based violence. Son of Jerry is a rapper with a difference, a man with a cause and has been dubbed ‘a breath of fresh air for hip hop’ by the Slikour On Life editorial team. He not only continues to advocate for social injustices, but also uses his musical background to create melodic, sing along feel-good music.
As part of his 10 year wedding anniversary, Son of Jerry has created a YouTube channel with his wife Phetola Makhetha centred around a celebration of love and marriage. Every week, The Makhs – as they’ve affectionately been dubbed – release 2 episodes on their show, Life Is But A Dream : With The Makhs (Click Link To Channel) which has already reached 1 000+ subscribers.
